Der Sync der Metadaten zwischen Traktor DJ und Traktor Pro war für mich einer der Hauptgründe, warum ich die iOS-App so gut fand. Tracks unterwegs zu gridden bzw. CUEpunkte und Loops zu setzen, empfand ich als ungeheuer praktisch. Aber nicht nur das: Auf dem Touchscreen fühlen sich diese Aufgaben besser untergebracht an, als auf dem normalen Rechner. Leider verschwand der dazu notwendige Metadatensync via Dropbox der beiden DJ-Apps mit dem Update auf iOS 7. Zwischendurch war die Funktion kurzzeitig wieder da und dann endgültig wieder weg.
Den Grund für dieses Hin und her haben wir leider nie erfahren. Bis heute. DJ Freshfluke, die gute Seele des NI Forums hat sich die Mühe gemacht und einige Fragen der Forumuser zusammengetragen und gebündelt bei Native Instruments platziert. Eine dieser Fragen lautete:
When will Metadata Sync come back? A lot of users are missing the removed feature.
Und hell yes, es gab eine ausführliche und für mich nachvollziehbare Antwort:
It’s hard to say. Metadata Sync used to work by taking advantage of the “Persistent UUID” which iTunes assigned to every track in the iTunes Library. Previously, that UUID would remain unchanged for as long as the track was kept in the iTunes Library, and that same UUID would be copied over with tracks copied to the iOS device via USB. A change in iTunes (I believe it happened with iOS 7) has broken that functionality: the UUIDs assigned to tracks can now change unexpectedly, thus causing a UUID mis-match between the tracks on the computer and those on the iOS device(s). Without this mechanism for ensuring proper track matching between devices, it is no longer possible to transfer the metadata between the matched tracks. We attempted to solve the problem by looking at other features of the tracks, such as their length, name, and so on, but this only provided a “soft match” which was not 100% reliable.
The only avenue we want to pursue is one which does not rely on iTunes at all for track identification as any change made to iTunes could potentially break the system again. This research is ongoing.
So ärgerlich der fehlende Sync für mich nach wie vor ist, ich bin froh, dass NI sich nicht wieder auf Apple verlassen will und eine von iTunes unabhängige Syncmöglichkeit schaffen will.
Der Rest des Forumthreads
ist nicht minder interessant. NI kündigt unter anderem an, dass bald der XDJ-1000 von Pioneer als HID-Controller für Traktor funktionieren wird. Das ist anscheinend nicht so einfach wie MIDI-Mapping sondern muss für jedes Gerät gesondert hartgecoded werden. Gut zu sehen, dass NI auch weiterhin Fremdhardware unterstützen will. Ausserdem erfahren wir, dass eine Integration von Maschine und Traktor in Arbeit ist, aber wohl noch ein paar Monate auf sich warten lassen wird.
