Roi hatte ich nur flüchtig auf der Salam Shalom Party getroffen. Er hatte nach mir und Lena seinen Gig. Während ich mein Kram zusammenpackte, fiel er mir auf, wie er gekonnt die Darbouka mit elektronischen Beats mischte. Es machte sofort klick, denn ich verstand seine musikalische Sprache. Hatte verstanden, dass dies seine Therapie ist, die er mit dem Publikum teilte, sie in Ekstase versetzte.

Roi ASAYAG, oder auch Rocky B. ist in Israel zur Welt gekommen, wo er bis 2013 lebte. Seit dem wohnt er in Berlin, die Stadt in der er auch seine Musik macht. Als er noch jünger war, sah er die arabische Kultur als primitiv, eine die rückständig ist und konservativ religiöse Ansichten hat. Er behauptet von sich, dass er wie viele jungen arabischen Isralelis, mit Selbst-Rassismus erfüllt gewesen sei:
I, like many other young Arab Israelis,was filled with self-racism and brainwashed to think that the Arab culture was the enemy’s culture. We, like our parents and grandparents, were aggressively taught to hate ourselves and to hate our ancestors. I believed in this lie until I was 18(!) although I had vast political awareness.
Zwischen 17 und 19 Jahren entdeckte die israelischen Black Panthers, eine Gruppe von arabischen Juden hauptsächlich aus Marocco stammend:
This was an uprise movement in the 1970s against the racist Israeli regime. They did not just demand equal rights for the jewish immigrants from Arab states but also freedom for the suppressed Palestinian people. Of course I have never learned about the Black Panthers in school. But the discovery took me on a journey into the Arab culture that was forcefully erased by the state of Israel. I discovered the horrible crimes that have been committed and at the same time I started to listen to more and more Arab music. Now it wasn’t primitive or kitschy romantic anymore, it touched my heart and soul.
