Wow: Neneh Cherry meldet sich mit einem neuen Song zurück und das begeistert mich gleich auf mehreren Ebenen. Zum einen schafft es die schwedische Sängerin 30 Jahre(!) nach ihrem ersten kommerziellen Erfolg (Buffalo Stance), immer noch mitreißende Musik zu veröffentlichen. Denkt mal kurz darüber nach, welche Artists aus den Achtziger- und Neunzigerjahren so etwas noch gelingt!
Dann dieser neue Song „Kong“. Produziert wurde er von Four Tet, mit dem sie schon zuvor arbeitete und 3D von Massive Attack. Und so hört sich das auch an: schleppende Trip-Hop Beats gepaart mit einer dubbigen Bassline, was beides im positiven Sinne an Massive Attacks „Karmacoma“ erinnert. Dazu die emphatischen, persönlichen und politischen Lyrics und der unverkennbare Gesang von Neneh Cherry…
Auch für das Video holte sich Neneh Cherry Profis in Boot. Regie führte Jenn Nkiru, die zuvor schon für das Video zu Apeshit von Beyoncé und Jay-Z mitverantwortlich war. Das Artwork für die Single stammt von Wolfgang Tillman, der erste Fotograf, der einen Turner Prize erhielt.
